Chapter 30

Georgia

A few hours later, three-the-hard-way were back in the room all aglow, laughing and chatting more than before.

“That was a good drink,” Star said, looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

“How many Venetian Sunsets did you have, Star?” I asked.

“More than I should have, that’s for sure.” She giggled as she spoke.

I gave my glance to Makkai, who stood tall and composed. “The designated driver here seemed to abstain.”

“I had to look out for you ladies.”

“But, it’s your birthday,” I told him.

“You must think my birthday is this month. It’s not until August.”

“Whatever.”

“You say so. I’m not complaining.”

“Oh my. That’s one big-ass Jacuzzi there,” said Star, jerking her head back as her eyes met the oversized, emerald-green ceramic tub. She looked at it like it had not been there before.

“Thanks for reminding me. We need to get this thing going,” I said, turning the long, golden faucets to release the full force of soothing, hot water. I handed Star a box of bath beads.

She poured a tiny bit of the ocean blue Calgon crystals into the water and swirled her hand along to do a temperature test. “It’s just right.”

Makkai popped the cork on one of the chilled magnum bottles of Cristal and poured a tall glass for Star.

“I will if you will. Take a sip, that is,” she told him as she took the glass from him.

“I will.” He immediately poured one for himself.

“Good.” She held up the glass and looked impressed. “Nothing but the best I see.”

“Absolutely.” He handed me a glass as well. “For you.”

“Well, just a sip or two,” I joked.

“Yeah, right,” he said unbelievingly. “Cheers.” Makkai raised his crystal flute.

I said, “To you and your birthday celebration, whenever your birthday is. And many more.”

“Here, here,” Star added, as we all raised our glasses and sipped in unison.

Makkai took two long gulps and his glass was empty. He poured himself another one.

Star sloshed the bubbly around in her mouth and said with a frown, “I need to brush my teeth from all of that garlic.” She placed her glass on top of the tiny white linoleum bar. “And Georgia, you brought real glasses too. That’s some good advance planning there.”

She reached into her backpack, removing her tiny cosmetic bag containing her toothbrush. She left the door open to the bathroom as she swirled Aquafresh along her tongue and teeth with her finger, finishing up the job with her blue toothbrush.

“Me too,” I said as I entered the bathroom just as Star exited. I slapped her butt and she giggled. It bounced just as she put her own hands on it, as if to stop the rolling motion herself.

Star grabbed her glass again and plopped down on the bed after another big gulp of champagne made its way down her throat. “Now this is some good-ass champagne.” She sucked her tongue.

Makkai inserted a CD into the portable boom box and began to play “Freak Me Baby” by Silk. He said, “It’s about to get even freakier once Georgia shows you her new outfit.
